Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install hexchat-otr on Ubuntu.

What is `hexchat-otr`

hexchat-otr is:

A plugin for the IRC client hexchat to support Off The Record (OTR) conversations.

OTR allows you to have private conversations over IM by providing:

Encryption
No one else can read your instant messages.
Authentication
You are assured the correspondent is who you think it is.
Deniability
The messages you send do not have digital signatures that are checkable by a third party. Anyone can forge messages after a conversation to make them look like they came from you. However, during a conversation, your correspondent is assured the messages they see are authentic and unmodified.
Perfect forward secrecy
If you lose control of your private keys, no previous conversation is compromised.

There are three methods to install hexchat-otr on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install hexchat-otr Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install hexchat-otr using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install hexchat-otr

Install hexchat-otr Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install hexchat-otr using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install hexchat-otr

Install hexchat-otr Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install hexchat-otr using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install hexchat-otr

How To Uninstall hexchat-otr on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the hexchat-otr package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove hexchat-otr

Uninstall hexchat-otr And Its Dependencies

To uninstall hexchat-otr and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove hexchat-otr

Remove hexchat-otr Configurations and Data

To remove hexchat-otr configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge hexchat-otr
