Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install h5utils on Ubuntu.
What is h5utils
h5utils is:
HDF5 (Hierarchical Data Format 5) is a file format for storing scientific data. These tools allow converting other formats to HDF5 and to visualize HDF5 files. They include:
- h5topng, which extracts a 2d slice of an HDF5 file and outputs a corresponding image in PNG format;
- h5totxt, which extracts 2d slices and outputs comma-delimited text (suitable for import into a spreadsheet);
- h5fromtxt, which converts simple text input into multi-dimensional numeric HDF5 datasets;
- h5fromh4, which converts HDF4 data to HDF5;
- h5tovtk, which converts HDF5 files to VTK files for visualization with VTK-aware programs;
There are three methods to install h5utils on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install h5utils Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install h5utils using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install h5utils
Install h5utils Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install h5utils using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install h5utils
Install h5utils Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install h5utils using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install h5utils
How To Uninstall h5utils on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the h5utils package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove h5utils
Uninstall h5utils And Its Dependencies
To uninstall h5utils and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove h5utils
Remove h5utils Configurations and Data
To remove h5utils configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge h5utils
Remove h5utils configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove h5utils configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge h5utils
