Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install grub-ipxe on Ubuntu.

What is grub-ipxe

grub-ipxe is:

iPXE is network boot firmware. It supports a variety of network cards, including some wireless cards, and variety of network protocols (traditional DHCP, BOOTP and TFTP and also HTTP, iSCSI, SAN via FCoE and Infiniband). It supports scripting.

This package adds a menu entry to grub2 for network booting using iPXE.

There are three methods to install grub-ipxe on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install grub-ipxe Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install grub-ipxe using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install grub-ipxe

Install grub-ipxe Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install grub-ipxe using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install grub-ipxe

Install grub-ipxe Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install grub-ipxe using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install grub-ipxe

How To Uninstall grub-ipxe on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the grub-ipxe package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove grub-ipxe

Uninstall grub-ipxe And Its Dependencies

To uninstall grub-ipxe and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove grub-ipxe

Remove grub-ipxe Configurations and Data

To remove grub-ipxe configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge grub-ipxe

Remove grub-ipxe configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove grub-ipxe configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge grub-ipxe
