In this tutorial we learn how to install grub-efi-amd64-bin on Ubuntu.
What is grub-efi-amd64-bin
grub-efi-amd64-bin is:
GRUB is a portable, powerful bootloader. This version of GRUB is based on a cleaner design than its predecessors, and provides the following new features:
- Scripting in grub.cfg using BASH-like syntax.
- Support for modern partition maps such as GPT.
- Modular generation of grub.cfg via update-grub. Packages providing GRUB add-ons can plug in their own script rules and trigger updates by invoking update-grub.
This package contains GRUB modules that have been built for use with the EFI-AMD64 architecture, as used by Intel Macs (unless a BIOS interface has been activated). It can be installed in parallel with other flavours, but will not automatically install GRUB as the active boot loader nor automatically update grub.cfg on upgrade unless grub-efi-amd64 is also installed.
There are three methods to install grub-efi-amd64-bin on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install grub-efi-amd64-bin Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install grub-efi-amd64-bin using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install grub-efi-amd64-bin

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install grub-efi-amd64-bin using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install grub-efi-amd64-bin
How To Uninstall grub-efi-amd64-bin on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the grub-efi-amd64-bin package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove grub-efi-amd64-bin

To uninstall grub-efi-amd64-bin and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove grub-efi-amd64-bin

To remove grub-efi-amd64-bin configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge grub-efi-amd64-bin
Remove grub-efi-amd64-bin configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove grub-efi-amd64-bin configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge grub-efi-amd64-bin
