How To Install gnu-efi on Ubuntu

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install gnu-efi on Ubuntu.

What is gnu-efi

gnu-efi is:

GNU toolchain for building applications that can run in the environment presented by Intel’s EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface). EFI is a firmware specification for the “BIOS” on ia64(IPF), IA-32(x86) and x86_64 systems.

There are three methods to install gnu-efi on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install gnu-efi Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install gnu-efi using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install gnu-efi

Install gnu-efi Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install gnu-efi using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install gnu-efi

Install gnu-efi Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install gnu-efi using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install gnu-efi

How To Uninstall gnu-efi on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the gnu-efi package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove gnu-efi

Uninstall gnu-efi And Its Dependencies

To uninstall gnu-efi and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove gnu-efi

Remove gnu-efi Configurations and Data

To remove gnu-efi configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge gnu-efi

Remove gnu-efi configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove gnu-efi configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gnu-efi
