Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install gfsecret on Ubuntu.

What is gfsecret

gfsecret is:

Gfsecret is a set of tools to facilitate secret sharing according to the Adi Shamir’s secret sharing scheme.

Two tools are provided: gfsec-split will split a file into several shares, and gfsec-use will reconstruct the original file from some of the shares. Both tools use the concept of a share URI, which is a way of describing a share with a URI-like syntax. The gfsec-split program uses them to know where to dispatch the generated shares, and gfsec-use uses them to know where to search for shares in order to reconstruct the original file.

The package also provide a script wrapper around gfsec-split: gfsec-split-gpg to facilitate splitting your GnuPG private primary key which can be combine with gfsec-use.

There are three methods to install gfsecret on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install gfsecret Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install gfsecret using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install gfsecret

Install gfsecret Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install gfsecret using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install gfsecret

Install gfsecret Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install gfsecret using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install gfsecret

How To Uninstall gfsecret on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the gfsecret package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove gfsecret

Uninstall gfsecret And Its Dependencies

To uninstall gfsecret and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove gfsecret

Remove gfsecret Configurations and Data

To remove gfsecret configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge gfsecret

Remove gfsecret configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove gfsecret configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gfsecret
