Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install gerris on Ubuntu.
What is gerris
gerris is:
Gerris is a system for the solution of the partial differential equations describing fluid flow.
A brief summary of its main (current) features:
- Solves the time-dependent incompressible variable-density Euler, Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations
- Adaptive mesh refinement: the resolution is adapted dynamically to the features of the flow
- Entirely automatic mesh generation in complex geometries
- Second-order in space and time
- Unlimited number of advected/diffused passive tracers
- Flexible specification of additional source terms
- Portable parallel support using the MPI library
- Volume of Fluid advection scheme for interfacial flows
This package has MPI support built in.
There are three methods to install gerris on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gerris Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gerris using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gerris
Install gerris Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gerris using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gerris
Install gerris Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gerris using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gerris
How To Uninstall gerris on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the gerris package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gerris
Uninstall gerris And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gerris and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gerris
Remove gerris Configurations and Data
To remove gerris configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gerris
Remove gerris configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove gerris configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gerris
