What is gdal-bin
gdal-bin is:
GDAL is a translator library for raster geospatial data formats. As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats. The related OGR library (which lives within the GDAL source tree) provides a similar capability for simple features vector data.
GDAL supports 40+ popular data formats, including commonly used ones (GeoTIFF, JPEG, PNG and more) as well as the ones used in GIS and remote sensing software packages (ERDAS Imagine, ESRI Arc/Info, ENVI, PCI Geomatics). Also supported many remote sensing and scientific data distribution formats such as HDF, EOS FAST, NOAA L1B, NetCDF, FITS.
OGR library supports popular vector formats like ESRI Shapefile, TIGER data, S57, MapInfo File, DGN, GML and more.
This package contains utility programs, based on GDAL/OGR library, namely gdal_translate, gdalinfo, gdaladdo, gdalwarp, ogr2ogr, ogrinfo, ogrtindex.
There are three methods to install gdal-bin on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gdal-bin Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gdal-bin using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gdal-bin
Install gdal-bin Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gdal-bin using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gdal-bin
Install gdal-bin Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gdal-bin using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gdal-bin
How To Uninstall gdal-bin on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the gdal-bin package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gdal-bin
Uninstall gdal-bin And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gdal-bin and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gdal-bin
Remove gdal-bin Configurations and Data
To remove gdal-bin configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gdal-bin
Remove gdal-bin configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove gdal-bin configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gdal-bin
