In this tutorial we learn how to install gconf2-common on Ubuntu.
What is gconf2-common
gconf2-common is:
GConf is a configuration database system for storing application preferences. It supports default or mandatory settings set by the administrator, and changes to the database are instantly applied to all running applications. It is written for the GNOME desktop but doesn’t require it.
This package contains the default configuration and localization files.
This package is for legacy applications and no longer used by GNOME.
There are three methods to install gconf2-common on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gconf2-common Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gconf2-common using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gconf2-common

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gconf2-common using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gconf2-common
Install gconf2-common Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gconf2-common using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gconf2-common
How To Uninstall gconf2-common on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the gconf2-common package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gconf2-common
Uninstall gconf2-common And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gconf2-common and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gconf2-common
Remove gconf2-common Configurations and Data
To remove gconf2-common configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gconf2-common
