In this tutorial we learn how to install gawk on Ubuntu.
What is gawk
gawk is:
`awk’, a program that you can use to select particular records in a file and perform operations upon them.
Gawk is the GNU Project’s implementation of the AWK programming language. It conforms to the definition of the language in the POSIX 1003.2 Command Language And Utilities Standard. This version in turn is based on the description in The AWK Programming Language, by Aho, Kernighan, and Weinberger, with the additional features defined in the System V Release 4 version of UNIX awk. Gawk also provides more recent Bell Labs awk extensions, and some GNU-specific extensions.
There are three methods to install gawk on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gawk Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gawk using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gawk
Install gawk Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gawk using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gawk
Install gawk Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gawk using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gawk
How To Uninstall gawk on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the gawk package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gawk
Uninstall gawk And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gawk and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gawk
Remove gawk Configurations and Data
To remove gawk configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gawk
Remove gawk configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove gawk configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gawk
