In this tutorial we learn how to install freetds-common on Ubuntu.
What is freetds-common
freetds-common is:
FreeTDS is an implementation of the Tabular DataStream protocol, used for connecting to MS SQL and Sybase servers over TCP/IP.
This package manages the configuration files that are common to all of the TDS client library implementations (CT-Lib, DB-Lib, and ODBC), stored in /etc/freetds/.
There are three methods to install freetds-common on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install freetds-common Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install freetds-common using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install freetds-common
Install freetds-common Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install freetds-common using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install freetds-common
Install freetds-common Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install freetds-common using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install freetds-common
How To Uninstall freetds-common on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the freetds-common package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove freetds-common
Uninstall freetds-common And Its Dependencies
To uninstall freetds-common and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove freetds-common
Remove freetds-common Configurations and Data
To remove freetds-common configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge freetds-common
