Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install flash on Ubuntu.

What is flash

flash is:

FLASH (Fast Length Adjustment of SHort reads) is a very fast and accurate software tool to merge paired-end reads from next-generation sequencing experiments. FLASH is designed to merge pairs of reads when the original DNA fragments are shorter than twice the length of reads. The resulting longer reads can significantly improve genome assemblies. They can also improve transcriptome assembly when FLASH is used to merge RNA-seq data.

There are three methods to install flash on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install flash Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install flash using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install flash

Install flash Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install flash using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install flash

Install flash Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install flash using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install flash

How To Uninstall flash on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the flash package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove flash

Uninstall flash And Its Dependencies

To uninstall flash and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove flash

Remove flash Configurations and Data

To remove flash configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge flash

Remove flash configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove flash configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge flash
