In this tutorial we learn how to install fastdnaml
on Ubuntu.
What is fastdnaml
fastdnaml is:
fastDNAml is a program derived from Joseph Felsenstein’s version 3.3 DNAML (part of his PHYLIP package). Users should consult the documentation for DNAML before using this program.
fastDNAml is an attempt to solve the same problem as DNAML, but to do so faster and using less memory, so that larger trees and/or more bootstrap replicates become tractable. Much of fastDNAml is merely a recoding of the PHYLIP 3.3 DNAML program from PASCAL to C.
Note that the homepage of this program is not available any more and so this program will probably not see any further updates.
There are three methods to install fastdnaml
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install fastdnaml Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install fastdnaml
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install fastdnaml

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install fastdnaml
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install fastdnaml
Install fastdnaml Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install fastdnaml
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install fastdnaml
How To Uninstall fastdnaml on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the fastdnaml
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove fastdnaml
Uninstall fastdnaml And Its Dependencies
To uninstall fastdnaml
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove fastdnaml
Remove fastdnaml Configurations and Data
To remove fastdnaml
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge fastdnaml
Remove fastdnaml configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove fastdnaml
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge fastdnaml
