How To Install erofs-utils on Ubuntu

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install erofs-utils on Ubuntu.

What is erofs-utils

erofs-utils is:

EROFS (Enhanced Read-Only File System) is a lightweight read-only file system with modern designs (eg. page-sized blocks, inline xattrs/data, etc.) for scenarios which need high-performance read-only requirements, e.g. Android OS for smartphones and LIVECDs.

It also provides fixed-sized output compression support, which improves storage density, keeps relatively higher compression ratios, which is more useful to achieve high performance for embedded devices with limited memory.

There are three methods to install erofs-utils on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install erofs-utils Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install erofs-utils using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install erofs-utils

Install erofs-utils Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install erofs-utils using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install erofs-utils

Install erofs-utils Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install erofs-utils using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install erofs-utils

How To Uninstall erofs-utils on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the erofs-utils package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove erofs-utils

Uninstall erofs-utils And Its Dependencies

To uninstall erofs-utils and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove erofs-utils

Remove erofs-utils Configurations and Data

To remove erofs-utils configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge erofs-utils

Remove erofs-utils configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove erofs-utils configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge erofs-utils
