Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install efibootmgr on Ubuntu.
What is efibootmgr
efibootmgr is:
This is a Linux user-space application to modify the Intel Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) Boot Manager configuration. This application can create and destroy boot entries, change the boot order, change the next running boot option, and more.
Additional information about (U)EFI can be found at http://www.uefi.org/.
Note: efibootmgr requires that the kernel module efivars be loaded prior to use. ‘modprobe efivars’ should do the trick if it does not automatically load.
There are three methods to install efibootmgr on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install efibootmgr Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install efibootmgr using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install efibootmgr
Install efibootmgr Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install efibootmgr using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install efibootmgr
Install efibootmgr Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install efibootmgr using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install efibootmgr
How To Uninstall efibootmgr on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the efibootmgr package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove efibootmgr
Uninstall efibootmgr And Its Dependencies
To uninstall efibootmgr and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove efibootmgr
Remove efibootmgr Configurations and Data
To remove efibootmgr configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge efibootmgr
Remove efibootmgr configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove efibootmgr configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge efibootmgr
