Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install dvipng on Ubuntu.
What is dvipng
dvipng is:
dvipng makes PNG graphics from DVI files as obtained from TeX and its relatives. It is intended to produce anti-aliased screen-resolution images as fast as is possible. This makes dvipng suitable for generating large amounts of images on-the-fly.
dvipng does not read the postamble, so it can be started before TeX finishes. It can read options interactively through stdin, and all options are usable. One can even change the input file through this interface.
dvipng supports PK, VF, PostScript Type1, and TrueType fonts, color specials and simple PostScript inclusion specials.
There are three methods to install dvipng on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install dvipng Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install dvipng using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install dvipng
Install dvipng Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install dvipng using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install dvipng
Install dvipng Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install dvipng using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install dvipng
How To Uninstall dvipng on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the dvipng package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove dvipng
Uninstall dvipng And Its Dependencies
To uninstall dvipng and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove dvipng
Remove dvipng Configurations and Data
To remove dvipng configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge dvipng
Remove dvipng configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove dvipng configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge dvipng
