In this tutorial we learn how to install dovecot-ldap on Ubuntu.

What is dovecot-ldap

dovecot-ldap is:

Dovecot is a mail server whose major goals are security and extreme reliability. It tries very hard to handle all error conditions and verify that all data is valid, making it nearly impossible to crash. It supports mbox/Maildir and its own dbox/mdbox formats, and should also be pretty fast, extensible, and portable.

This package provides LDAP support for Dovecot.

There are three methods to install dovecot-ldap on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install dovecot-ldap Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install dovecot-ldap using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install dovecot-ldap

Install dovecot-ldap Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install dovecot-ldap using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install dovecot-ldap

Install dovecot-ldap Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install dovecot-ldap using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install dovecot-ldap

How To Uninstall dovecot-ldap on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the dovecot-ldap package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove dovecot-ldap

Uninstall dovecot-ldap And Its Dependencies

To uninstall dovecot-ldap and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove dovecot-ldap

Remove dovecot-ldap Configurations and Data

To remove dovecot-ldap configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge dovecot-ldap

Remove dovecot-ldap configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove dovecot-ldap configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge dovecot-ldap
