Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install distcc-pump on Ubuntu.

What is distcc-pump

distcc-pump is:

distcc is a program to distribute compilation of C or C++ code across several machines on a network. distcc should always generate the same results as a local compile, is simple to install and use, and is often significantly faster than a local compile. distcc does not require all machines to share a filesystem, have synchronized clocks, or to have the same libraries or header files installed.

this package contains the necessary additions for distcc’s “pump” mode, which improves on plain distcc by distributing not only compilation but also preprocessing to distcc servers.

If you have more than 10 CPUs involved in your distcc setup, you should consider using this package on your distcc client machine.

There are three methods to install distcc-pump on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install distcc-pump Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install distcc-pump using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install distcc-pump

Install distcc-pump Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install distcc-pump using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install distcc-pump

Install distcc-pump Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install distcc-pump using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install distcc-pump

How To Uninstall distcc-pump on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the distcc-pump package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove distcc-pump

Uninstall distcc-pump And Its Dependencies

To uninstall distcc-pump and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove distcc-pump

Remove distcc-pump Configurations and Data

To remove distcc-pump configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge distcc-pump

Remove distcc-pump configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove distcc-pump configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge distcc-pump
