Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install cdist on Ubuntu.
What is cdist
cdist is:
cdist is a usable configuration management system. It adheres to the KISS principle and is being used in small up to enterprise grade environments. It has the following noteworthy features:
- shell scripting configuration language
- access to all control structures (if, case, for, while)
- idempotent target properties
- zero-dependencies: target system need only /bin/sh and ssh
- push-based distribution
- highly-scalable
cdist is an alternative to other configuration management systems like cfengine, bcfg2, chef and puppet.
There are three methods to install cdist on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install cdist Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install cdist using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install cdist
Install cdist Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install cdist using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install cdist
Install cdist Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install cdist using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install cdist
How To Uninstall cdist on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the cdist package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove cdist

To uninstall cdist and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove cdist
Remove cdist Configurations and Data
To remove cdist configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge cdist
