How To Install avahi-discover on Ubuntu

In this tutorial we learn how to install avahi-discover on Ubuntu.

What is avahi-discover

avahi-discover is:

Avahi is a fully LGPL framework for Multicast DNS Service Discovery. It allows programs to publish and discover services and hosts running on a local network with no specific configuration. For example you can plug into a network and instantly find printers to print to, files to look at and people to talk to.

This package contains a user interface for discovering services.

There are three methods to install avahi-discover on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install avahi-discover Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install avahi-discover using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install avahi-discover

Install avahi-discover Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install avahi-discover using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install avahi-discover

Install avahi-discover Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install avahi-discover using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install avahi-discover

How To Uninstall avahi-discover on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the avahi-discover package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove avahi-discover

Uninstall avahi-discover And Its Dependencies

To uninstall avahi-discover and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove avahi-discover

Remove avahi-discover Configurations and Data

To remove avahi-discover configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge avahi-discover

Remove avahi-discover configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove avahi-discover configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge avahi-discover
