on Ubuntu.
What is arpwatch
arpwatch is:
Arpwatch maintains a database of Ethernet MAC addresses seen on the network, with their associated IP pairs. Alerts the system administrator via e-mail if any change happens, such as new station/activity, flip-flops, changed and re-used old addresses.
If you want to maintain a list authorized MAC addresses manually, take a look at the arpalert package which may fit your needs better.
There are three methods to install arpwatch
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install arpwatch Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install arpwatch
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install arpwatch
Install arpwatch Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install arpwatch
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install arpwatch
Install arpwatch Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install arpwatch
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install arpwatch
How To Uninstall arpwatch on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the arpwatch
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove arpwatch

To uninstall arpwatch
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
