Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install apt-venv
on Ubuntu.
What is apt-venv
apt-venv is:
apt-venv creates a sort of virtual environment in the user home directory, forcing apt to run under some custom option.
A simple use case is collect information about packages in different Debian and Ubuntu releases without surfing the web, just calling apt-cache through the virtual environment.
There are three methods to install apt-venv
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install apt-venv Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install apt-venv
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install apt-venv

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install apt-venv
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install apt-venv
Install apt-venv Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install apt-venv
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install apt-venv
How To Uninstall apt-venv on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the apt-venv
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove apt-venv
Uninstall apt-venv And Its Dependencies
To uninstall apt-venv
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove apt-venv
Remove apt-venv Configurations and Data
To remove apt-venv
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge apt-venv
Remove apt-venv configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove apt-venv
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge apt-venv
