In this tutorial we learn how to install appstream-compose
on Ubuntu.
What is appstream-compose
appstream-compose is:
AppStream is a metadata specification which permits software components to provide information about themselves to automated systems and end-users before the software is actually installed. This permits informative displays of new applications to users in software centers, as well as allowing a system to make decisions on which new software a user might want to install (e.g. missing firmware or media handlers).
This package extends the appstreamcli
utility with a compose
subcommand
to generate AppStream metadata and media files from directory trees.
There are three methods to install appstream-compose
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install appstream-compose Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install appstream-compose
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install appstream-compose

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install appstream-compose
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install appstream-compose
Install appstream-compose Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install appstream-compose
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install appstream-compose
How To Uninstall appstream-compose on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the appstream-compose
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove appstream-compose
Uninstall appstream-compose And Its Dependencies
To uninstall appstream-compose
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove appstream-compose
Remove appstream-compose Configurations and Data
To remove appstream-compose
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge appstream-compose

We can use the following command to remove appstream-compose
