In this tutorial we learn how to install acpi-support
on Ubuntu.
What is acpi-support
acpi-support is:
This package contains scripts to react to various ACPI events. It only includes scripts for events that can be supported with some level of safety cross platform.
It is able to:
- Detect loss and gain of AC power, lid closure, and the press of a number of specific buttons (on Asus, IBM, Lenovo, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba laptops).
- Suspend, hibernate and resume the computer, with workarounds for hardware that needs it.
- On some laptops, set screen brightness.
There are three methods to install acpi-support
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install acpi-support Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install acpi-support
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install acpi-support

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install acpi-support
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install acpi-support
Install acpi-support Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install acpi-support
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install acpi-support
How To Uninstall acpi-support on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the acpi-support
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove acpi-support
Uninstall acpi-support And Its Dependencies
To uninstall acpi-support
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove acpi-support
Remove acpi-support Configurations and Data
To remove acpi-support
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge acpi-support
