In this tutorial we learn how to install abcl
on Ubuntu.
What is abcl
abcl is:
Armed Bear Common Lisp (ABCL) is a conforming implementation of ANSI X3J13 Common Lisp that runs in the Java Virtual Machine. It compiles Lisp code directly to Java byte code for execution.
It also provides the following integration methods for interfacing with Java code and libraries:
- Lisp code can create Java objects and call their methods;
- Java code can call Lisp functions and generic functions, either directly or Java Scripting API (JSR-223);
- it is possible to create Lisp-side implementations of Java interfaces that can be used as listeners for Swing classes and similar.
There are three methods to install abcl
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install abcl Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install abcl
using apt-get

How To Uninstall abcl on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the abcl
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove abcl

sudo apt-get -y autoremove abcl
Remove abcl Configurations and Data
To remove abcl
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge abcl
